Anxiety over online storage

Storage on the Cloud has manifold advantages. It’s cheaper, more convenient, and accessible. So what’s the catch? Some individuals have reported anxiety over their online storage in recent times.

The Gigwise article on the topic is oriented around individual concerns, but the root thought is the same for enterprises; Cloud storage’s efficiency comes from taking my data and offloading it (and therefore the hardware requirements and infrastructure needs) onto a third-party partner. This works amazingly until it doesn’t, and organizations just like individuals should consider what happens then.

The main concerns come into play when the sole storage or repository for your data is online, without a local mirror. Forget major catastrophes, cyberattacks or other existential threats; the most common and simple issue is simply connection loss. Without access to your data, the company cannot continue to work until connection is restored.

What’s the solution?

There’s a few easy ones, namely:

  • Keep a local copy of your data that you can access in times of need, and mix your online and offline storage
  • Use a system which allows continued access to data by end users

A good example of the second is the contentACCESS Archive or Backup, both of which allow for end-user access to their archived or backed up files, allowing for a secondary data deposit to exist separate from the live system.

Taken together, these approaches help stave off some of the worst data-access issues you may find yourself facing and keep your organization working smoothly away despite any hiccups.
