Data on the Cloud – Migration and Management

Cloud adoption continues to climb, showing despite the already staggering numbers and rising challenges that the Cloud is nowhere near market saturation yet. This naturally leads organizations to consider two related topics – migration of assets to the Cloud, and management of data on the Cloud.

The Cloud continues to grow

Cloud growth continues across related fields, including the growth of industries related to the Cloud. For example, Cloud Discovery (a subfield dedicated to identification and management of cloud assets) is seeing extremely rapid development, reflecting the volume-driven need to manage Cloud-borne data and assets

We’ve covered previously how the Cloud is attractive to companies – in short, because the possibility of offloading operating costs of hardware onto a third-party is extremely tempting, no matter if that hardware is simple storage space or computing power and no matter if the Cloud is a public or private environment.

This attraction is what has driven the explosive growth which, as Gartner’s statistics show, is nowhere near slowing down. This despite the fact that migration to and from the Cloud brings several challenges of its own.

Challenges of migration

The process of migration to the Cloud is not a simple one. We have covered it previously in more detail, but in short, it can be summed up with the following:

  • Define migration goals
  • Choose a cloud provider
  • Select automation tools
  • Pick the migration strategy
  • Prepare a backup system

Once the process is planned out, it can be executed. Ideally speaking, the migration of your data should be given as much space as possible to ensure a lossless, minimum risk procedure. This can be handed off to a trusted partner or third party as well for an even lower degree of stress.

Issues of building on the Cloud

While migrating to the Cloud is at this point a pretty well known and understood process, migrating back off – and why you might want to – is a story of its own.

Many major Cloud providers have a degree of lock-in to try and keep their customers in place. Accompanying this is a worrying tendency by organizations to underestimate the importance of keeping some of their capabilities and systems – such as an independent backup or archive – separate from their main Cloud environment.

As a consequence, organizations may sooner or later find themselves in a situation where their current Cloud is no longer an economical choice, or not desirable for other reasons. In this moment, they’ll find that while tools and partners for migrating data onto the Cloud are becoming more common, migrating back off the Cloud to an on-premises or hybrid system is less understood and covered.

Furthermore, Cloud storage is one of the more regulated spaces in the IT sphere these days; GDPR and other regulations state what data can be stored where, and what the handling expectations are. For organizations looking to cut down on their overhead, this is a factor to consider – if you are not merely replacing one set of tasks and expenditures for another.
