Quest Archive Manager announces EOL

Quest Archive Manager (QAM), previously Metalogix Archive Manager (MAM), has quietly announced they’ve hit end-of-sale and will reach end-of-life next year. This is the end of an era for some. Now, it’s time to look to the future – what comes next, and what’ll it look like for MAM users?

“What now?”

That’ll be the most common question in some boardrooms over the coming months. Some companies may feel a compulsion to try and keep their archive running as-is despite EOL. Temporarily, this might even work – but it opens an unpleasant number of issues.

First and simplest is that any part of the system which relies on external architecture is liable to simply cease operation once EOL hits; this rather obviously interrupts business. But it is far from the only issue.

Security updates and regulatory compliance all require a high degree of flexibility and periodic updates. With EOL, no more updates will be upcoming. The now-defunct system will remain static – with all the issues this entails. As such, the only long-term viable solution is to replace it. This means migrating the data, reindexing it and setting up a new system to replace it.

Migration has its own pitfalls

Migrating data from one system to another has no end of issues that have to be navigated. In particular:

  • Shortcut / stub handling – can your system map shortcuts correctly after migration?
  • Journal reconstruction – have you retained the original structures?
  • Metadata integrity – a necessity to avoid legal liability and risk
  • Ownership mapping – whose data is whose, including ex-employees, and who has access?

The most reliable route to take is to make use of a trusted migration system to handle these potential trouble spots for you – greatly increasing the chance of a successful migration without unexpected problems or stress.
