Late Thursday of last week, another major company had their systems compromised, this time by a hacktivist cyberattack on Uber. The attackers gained access to critical systems by posing as IT administrators and asking workers for their credentials, accessing both Slack internal chat and emails in this way. According to Cybersecurity Insiders, they proceeded to compromise more and more systems including “the company Amazon Web Services console, Vmware ESXi, virtual machines, Google Workspace and some app development data.” Uber has shut down their entire company Slack Messaging System pending an investigation, crippling internal communications.
Some screenshots of the compromised emails have since been released by the hackers to prove that they have access to internal information, though sources are not yet clear on if this includes customer data. Bleeping Computer additionally reported the attacker had accessed and taken data from Uber’s HackerOne bug bounty program, which could be particularly dangerous for Uber if it contains undisclosed or unpatched vulnerabilities in its application.
